Zegapain's Mizaki Shizuno

I started this picture literally months ago (in April I think). I had just seen the first episode and love the mecha design (especially the holonic weapon). Since I am no good at drawing mecha I decided to draw Shizuno who is the "wizard" who controls the weapons and shields for the mecha Zegapain Altair. The controls at her finger tips are the ones she uses in the cockpit of Altair.

The controls too a lot of time to draw and duplicating one only upside-down and backwards was even more fun. The hardest part of this picture was creating the weapon itself. I had thousands of guide lines set up in Photoshop to help me keep the two sides equal and estimate where things should be placed. Even with all that I still managed to make the top side of it slightly bigger than it should be and the barrel is shorter than it should be. (it should be 1/3 to 2/3 ratio). I also had a heck of a time trying to find good references. The digi sub I have wont work in the program I usually use for screen caps so I had to pause the program I was viewing it in and draw from there. Suffice to say I think I did pretty well.

I had intended to draw an elaborate background and border but I just couldn't stay focused on the picture long enough. It took a lot just to finish it up. The weapon got frustrating fairly quickly.
